Anticipation

From the Lost Drawings Series by Peter Bogdanov
Graphite on vellum paper

Drawn during his foundational years in art school, “Anticipation” captures a moment that transcends its medium. With nothing more than graphite on vellum, Peter Bogdanov evokes the charged stillness before motion—the quiet electricity of a body and mind on the verge of something. This is a study of posture, yes—but also of presence.

The figure is seen mid-turn, one leg bent, weight distributed with care, as if about to shift or speak or decide. The line work is precise, but never cold. There’s breath in the negative space. Bogdanov’s early mastery shows in the tension between control and emotion—the technical skill holding back a deeper, unspoken energy. In this moment, the subject is both exposed and contained, like a thought not yet spoken aloud.

This drawing, like many in the Lost Drawings series, was once part of a physical archive that spanned decades of Bogdanov’s life and artistic journey. The original was lost in the twin hurricanes that tore through his Florida home in 2024. Only a high-resolution digital file remained, recovered just in time to preserve the integrity of the work.

To own “Anticipation” is to hold space for a moment that almost vanished—a relic of vulnerability, a student’s hand reaching into the future. It is a study not only of form, but of pause, of breath, of the thin edge where choice begins.
